Roman Catholicism In Zimbabwe

The Roman Catholic Church in Zimbabwe is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and curia in Rome.

There are just under one million Catholics in the country (about 7% of the total population). There are eight dioceses, including two archdioceses. The most famous Catholic churchman in Zimbabwe is Pius Ncube, the former archbishop of Bulawayo, an outspoken critic of the government of Robert Mugabe, who is also a Roman Catholic.

Famous quotes containing the words roman and/or catholicism:

A Roman divorced from his wife, being highly blamed by his friends, who demanded, “Was she not chaste? Was she not fair? Was she not fruitful?” holding out his shoe, asked them whether it was not new and well made. “Yet,” added he, “none of you can tell where it pinches me.”
    Plutarch (c. 46–120 A.D.)

When Catholicism goes bad it becomes the world-old, world-wide religio of amulets and holy places and priestcraft. Protestantism, in its corresponding decay, becomes a vague mist of ethical platitudes. Catholicism is accused of being too much like all the other religions; Protestantism of being insufficiently like a religion at all. Hence Plato, with his transcendent Forms, is the doctor of Protestants; Aristotle, with his immanent Forms, the doctor of Catholics.
