Early Life
Born at or near Culross, Perthshire, he was the son of John Pont of Shyresmill and Catherine Murray. He received his early education in the school of Culross, and in 1543 was incorporated in the college of St. Leonards in the university of St. Andrews. On completing the course of philosophy there he is said to have studied law at a foreign university; nothing, however, is definitely known of his career until 1559, when he was settled at St. Andrews, and acted as an elder of the kirk session there.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“Here is this vast, savage, howling mother of ours, Nature, lying all around, with such beauty, and such affection for her children, as the leopard; and yet we are so early weaned from her breast to society, to that culture which is exclusively an interaction of man on man,a sort of breeding in and in, which produces at most a merely English nobility, a civilization destined to have a speedy limit.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“I learned early in life that you get places by having the right enemies.”
—Bishop John Spong (b. 1931)
