Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees were a professional ice hockey team based in Hidalgo, Texas, and played their home games at State Farm Arena. They were a member of the Central Hockey League, and two time Central Hockey League franchise of the year (2003–2004 and 2008–2009). Billy Newson, formerly of the Northeastern University Huskies, was the franchise's leader in goals (90), assists (102) and points (192), while Ryan Shmyr - son of World Hockey Association All-Star defenseman Paul Shmyr - is the career leader in games played and penalty minutes.

On June 28, 2011, Terry Ruskowski became the coach of the Killer Bees. He had formerly been the initial coach of the rival Laredo Bucks. Ruskowski has a two-year contract with the Bees.

on June 20, 2012, mulitiple sources confirmed that the Killer Bees will not play in the 2012-2013 season and a Junior hockey team from the North American Hockey League would replace them. It was made official later that day. The team most suspected to come down from the NAHL to play in the place of the bees is the Topeka RoadRunners. One source said that the team might keep the killer bees name.

I hear ... foreigners, who would boycott an employer if he hired a colored workman, complain of wrong and oppression, of low wages and long hours, clamoring for eight-hour systems ... ah, come with me, I feel like saying, I can show you workingmen’s wrong and workingmen’s toil which, could it speak, would send up a wail that might be heard from the Potomac to the Rio Grande; and should it unite and act, would shake this country from Carolina to California.
    Anna Julia Cooper (1859–1964)
