Tomlinson's parents live in Carlisle, and one of his brothers lives in Australia. His other brother, Matthew, is the vicar of St Augustine's Church, Edgbaston.
Tomlinson is described as "tall, handsome and lean". The Geneva press reported that he had a "perfect command of French ".
