Underground Railroad

From 1797 until his death in 1831, Allen and Sarah operated a station on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves. Mother Bethel Church continued such aid until the Emancipation. During and after the Civil War, the congregation also aided blacks migrating to Philadelphia from the rural South, helping them to learn its urban ways.<
