History

thumb|left|upright|When Rhodes was an industrial suburb the rail line had many sidings connecting to factories. This sign points to a former rail crossing. The suburb of Rhodes was formerly predominately industrial. Beginning in the 1990s with the gated village/suburb of Liberty Grove (the luxury suburb opened in 1998) the area was redeveloped. It now includes residential apartments, commercial offices and the Rhodes Waterside shopping centre.

In the 2000s Rhodes station underwent a major redevelopment, with the new station featuring a new air conditioned concourse with lofty roofs, glass walls and curving, bright ceilings. There are covered staircases and lifts to the fully undercover platforms. On the concourse, there are two ticket offices for passenger information and ticket sales.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

The greatest horrors in the history of mankind are not due to the ambition of the Napoleons or the vengeance of the Agamemnons, but to the doctrinaire philosophers. The theories of the sentimentalist Rousseau inspired the integrity of the passionless Robespierre. The cold-blooded calculations of Karl Marx led to the judicial and business-like operations of the Cheka.
    Aleister Crowley (1875–1947)
