Republic of China at The 1972 Summer Olympics

The Republic of China (Taiwan) competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich for the last time as the "Republic of China". The ROC would not return to the Olympics until 1984 and under the name "Chinese Taipei" due to objections by the People's Republic of China over the political status of Taiwan. The PRC, amid the height of the Cultural Revolution, boycotted the Olympics due to the Taiwanese participation under the name "Republic of China".

Famous quotes containing the words republic of, republic, china and/or summer:

The first requisite of a good citizen in this republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his weight.
    Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919)

Paper is cheap, and authors need not now erase one book before they write another. Instead of cultivating the earth for wheat and potatoes, they cultivate literature, and fill a place in the Republic of Letters. Or they would fain write for fame merely, as others actually raise crops of grain to be distilled into brandy.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    The roof of England fell
    Great Paris tolled her bell
And China staunched her milk and wept for bread
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)

The restlessness that comes upon girls upon summer evenings results in lasting trouble unless it is speedily controlled. The right kind of man does not look for a wife on the streets, and the right kind of girl waits till the man comes to her home for her.
    Sedalia Times (1900)
