Republic of Ancona

The Anconine Republic (Italian: Repubblica Anconitana) was a revolutionary municipality formed on 19 November 1797. It came about after a French victory at Ancona in February 1797, and the consequent occupation of the city. It existed in the region of Marche, with capital Ancona. Despite the Treaty of Campo Formio had stated that Ancona and its surrounder region had to be return to the Papal States, the municipality proclaimed the decadence of the papal rule, under French protection. The tension led to a general conflict with the Pope and the French occupation of all his State. Ancona was so incorporated into the Roman Republic on 7 March 1798. It had a consul as its head.

Ancona is now a province of Italy, which is in central Italy on the Adriatic Sea.

Famous quotes containing the words republic of and/or republic:

Paper is cheap, and authors need not now erase one book before they write another. Instead of cultivating the earth for wheat and potatoes, they cultivate literature, and fill a place in the Republic of Letters. Or they would fain write for fame merely, as others actually raise crops of grain to be distilled into brandy.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Universal empire is the prerogative of a writer. His concerns are with all mankind, and though he cannot command their obedience, he can assign them their duty. The Republic of Letters is more ancient than monarchy, and of far higher character in the world than the vassal court of Britain.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)
