Reinhold Niebuhr - Personal Style

Personal Style

Niebuhr was often described as a charismatic speaker. The journalist Alden Whitman wrote of his speaking style:

"He possessed a deep voice and large blue eyes. He used his arms as though he were an orchestra conductor. Occasionally one hand would strike out, with a pointed finger at the end, to accent a trenchant sentence. He talked rapidly and (because he disliked to wear spectacles for his far-sightedness) without notes; yet he was adroit at building logical climaxes and in communicating a sense of passionate involvement in what he was saying."

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or style:

I have enjoyed greatly the second blooming that comes when you finish the life of the emotions and of personal relations; and suddenly you find—at the age of fifty, say—that a whole new life has opened before you, filled with things you can think about, study, or read about.... It is as if a fresh sap of ideas and thoughts was rising in you.
    Agatha Christie (1891–1976)

In comedy, the witty style wins out over every mishap of the plot.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
