Film Composing Career

In 1994, Heil became friends with Australian musician Johnny Klimek, a producer of Berlin underground techno DJs. What began as a casual partnership producing trip hop tunes in a Berlin studio, led Heil and Klimek to collaborating with German director Tom Tykwer on scoring his second feature, Winter Sleepers. Two years later, the trio scored Tykwer's breakthrough hit, Run Lola Run and all Tykwer's subsequent films with the exception of Heaven in 2002.

Heil moved to California in 1997. His film and television credits include Run Lola Run, One Hour Photo, The International, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, HBO’s Deadwood, CBS’s Without a Trace, NBC’s Awake, and the epic adventure drama Cloud Atlas, based on a best selling novel by David Mitchell, directed by Lana Wachowski, Andy Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer. The score for Cloud Atlas was nominated for a Golden Globe award.

He continues to collaborate with Klimek on selected projects while working primarily as an individual composer. He is represented by First Artists Management.

Famous quotes containing the words film, composing and/or career:

I think of horror films as art, as films of confrontation. Films that make you confront aspects of your own life that are difficult to face. Just because you’re making a horror film doesn’t mean you can’t make an artful film.
    David Cronenberg (b. 1943)

The worth of a State, in the long run, is the worth of the individuals composing it ... a State which dwarfs its men, in order that they may be more docile instruments in its hands even for beneficial purposes—will find that with small men no great thing can really be accomplished.
    John Stuart Mill (1806–1873)

John Brown’s career for the last six weeks of his life was meteor-like, flashing through the darkness in which we live. I know of nothing so miraculous in our history.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
