Rear Suspension

For front-wheel drive cars, rear suspension has few constraints and a variety of beam axles and independent suspensions are used.

For rear-wheel drive cars, rear suspension has many constraints and the march to the superior but more expensive independent suspension layout has been a long slog. The dynamics of such a vehicle are that the rear suspension must counteract by the tendency of the rolling wheel traveling in the opposite direction from the vehicle. This must be countered by the rear suspension taking up a counter-clockwise torque; otherwise, the body and frame of the car will strip itself off the rear suspension, whatever it is. It is that need which dominates several of the varieties of rear suspension.

Famous quotes containing the words rear and/or suspension:

In a number of other cultures, fathers are not relegated to babysitter status, nor is their ability to be primary nurturers so readily dismissed.... We have evidence that in our own society men can rear and nurture their children competently and that men’s methods, although different from those of women, are imaginative and constructive.
    Kyle D. Pruett (20th century)

If the oarsmen of a fast-moving ship suddenly cease to row, the suspension of the driving force of the oars doesn’t prevent the vessel from continuing to move on its course. And with a speech it is much the same. After he has finished reciting the document, the speaker will still be able to maintain the same tone without a break, borrowing its momentum and impulse from the passage he has just read out.
    Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 B.C)
