Famous quotes containing the words united states, united, states and/or service:

What chiefly distinguishes the daily press of the United States from the press of all other countries is not its lack of truthfulness or even its lack of dignity and honor, for these deficiencies are common to the newspapers everywhere, but its incurable fear of ideas, its constant effort to evade the discussion of fundamentals by translating all issues into a few elemental fears, its incessant reduction of all reflection to mere emotion. —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

    Herbert Hoover (1874–1964)

If the Soviet Union can give up the Brezhnev Doctrine for the Sinatra Doctrine, the United States can give up the James Monroe Doctrine for the Marilyn Monroe Doctrine: Let’s all go to bed wearing the perfume we like best.
    Carlos Fuentes (b. 1928)

The masochist: “I send my tormentor hurrying hither and thither in the service of my suffering and desire.”
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
