Queensland Core Skills Test

The Queensland Core Skills Test is a statewide test completed by all Queensland year twelve students who wish to be eligible for an Overall Position (OP) and is optional (but beneficial) for tertiary rank students. These ranks are used to gain entrance into tertiary degrees and courses. In-school subject rankings given to students are scaled and moderated using the performance of the subject cohort at individual schools on the QCS test. The QCS test is the only statewide external exam conducted in the two senior years of secondary education (years 11 and 12).

The QCS Test is claimed to be an achievement test grounded in the year 12 curriculum, rather than a measure of intelligence or aptitude. Moreover, the test is aimed to be accessible to all students regardless of subject choice, with general knowledge, vocabulary and mathematics tested only to the common year 10 level. It is held over two consecutive days late in Term 3.

In 2010, a student-organised movement, fuelled by the popular social networking site Facebook suggested that students mention Bear Grylls in the writing task or in the short response task, similar to Project Clooney '09 in the General Achievement Test. A similar movement was started in 2011, substituting Harry Potter for Bear Grylls.

Famous quotes containing the words core, skills and/or test:

Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today—but the core of science fiction, its essence ... has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.
    Isaac Asimov (1920–1992)

Some parents were awful back then and are awful still. The process of raising you didn’t turn them into grown-ups. Parents who were clearly imperfect can be helpful to you. As you were trying to grow up despite their fumbling efforts, you had to develop skills and tolerances other kids missed out on. Some of the strongest people I know grew up taking care of inept, invalid, or psychotic parents—but they know the parents weren’t normal, healthy, or whole.
    Frank Pittman (20th century)

The test of an adventure is that when you’re in the middle of it, you say to yourself, “Oh, now I’ve got myself into an awful mess; I wish I were sitting quietly at home.” And the sign that something’s wrong with you is when you sit quietly at home wishing you were out having lots of adventure.
    Thornton Wilder (1897–1975)
