Queens High School Of Teaching

The Queens High School of Teaching, Liberal Arts and the Sciences (QHST) (26Q566) is a public high school in Glen Oaks, New York located on the Frank A. Padavan Campus, a sprawling 32-acre (130,000 m2) landscaped campus, which contains QHST and two other neighboring 'kindergarten-8th' grade schools: P.S./I.S. 266 and P.S./I.S. 208. It is one of the only schools in New York City that has a campus, which is the largest public school campus ever built in the United States. The campus—originally named the Glen Oaks Campus—was renamed in 2008 in honor of a state senator who at the time was running for re-election.

Its three Small Learning Communities are named "Emerson," "Freire," and "Montessori." The school opened in Fall 2003. It currently serves grades 9-12 under principal Eric Contreras. The original principal was Nigel Pugh.

Famous quotes containing the words queens, high, school and/or teaching:

    “Your strength, that is so lofty and fierce and kind,
    It might call up a new age, calling to mind
    The queens that were imagined long ago,
    Is but half yours....”
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    I laugh at the lore and pride of man
    At the sophist schools, and the learned clan;
    For what are they all, in their high conceit,
    When man in the bush with God may meet?
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    Out of life’s school of war.—What does not destroy me, makes me stronger.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

    It is sentimentalism to assume that the teaching of life can always be fitted to the child’s interests, just as it is empty formalism to force the child to parrot the formulas of adult society. Interests can be created and stimulated.
    Jerome S. Bruner (20th century)
