Brief History
Following the 1660 restoration of the monarchy, Charles II of England rewarded, on March 24, 1663, eight men for their faithful support of his efforts to regain the throne of England. He granted the eight, called Lords Proprietors or simply Proprietors, the land called Carolina, which had been named in honor of Charles I, his father (Carolus being the Latin version of the name 'Charles').
