Provencher (electoral District) - History

History

The electoral district was created in 1871 after Manitoba joined the Canadian Confederation in 1870. It is notable for being the district that elected the rebel Louis Riel to the House of Commons.

This constituency has recently been considered relatively safe for Conservative members. The riding elected Liberal Party of Canada MPs from 1904–1957, and intermittently since then, including as recently as 1993–2000.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

We know only a single science, the science of history. One can look at history from two sides and divide it into the history of nature and the history of men. However, the two sides are not to be divided off; as long as men exist the history of nature and the history of men are mutually conditioned.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.
    —J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)

When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.
    William James (1842–1910)
