Proudfoot is a name that has its origins in the North Ridings (the borderland area) of north-eastern England and south-eastern Scotland. This area includes Berwickshire, Perthshire, and Northumbria.

The surname is believed to simply mean, "a person with a proud step"; a nickname for a proud person.

This medieval name is less common in modern times, but it is most frequently heard of in south-eastern Scotland and the east of Ulster (Northern Ireland). There are also a significant number of Proudfeet in the United States of America and Canada.

There is a Germanic link to the name. Stolzfuss, or Stoltefoth, is also a nickname composed of the elements stolt ‘proud’ + vot ‘foot’, denoting someone of haughty gait; alternatively, from the German stolzen ‘to limp’ + fuos ‘leg’, a nickname for someone who walked with a limp.
