Prose Narrative

Famous quotes containing the words prose and/or narrative:

    “There comes Emerson first, whose rich words, every one,
    Are like gold nails in temples to hang trophies on,
    Whose prose is grand verse, while his verse, the Lord knows,
    Is some of it pr—No, ‘t is not even prose;
    I’m speaking of metres;
    James Russell Lowell (1819–1891)

    We have defined a story as a narrative of events arranged in their time-sequence. A plot is also a narrative of events, the emphasis falling on causality. “The king died and then the queen died” is a story. “The king died, and then the queen died of grief” is a plot. The time sequence is preserved, but the sense of causality overshadows it.
