Primitive Root

In mathematics, a primitive root may mean either

  • a primitive root modulo n in modular arithmetic, or
  • a primitive nth root of unity amongst the solutions of xn = 1 in a field

Famous quotes containing the words primitive and/or root:

The sight of a Black nun strikes their sentimentality; and, as I am unalterably rooted in native ground, they consider me a work of primitive art, housed in a magical color; the incarnation of civilized, anti-heathenism, and the fruit of a triumphing idea.
    Alice Walker (b. 1944)

A radical generally meant a man who thought he could somehow pull up the root without affecting the flower. A conservative generally meant a man who wanted to conserve everything except his own reason for conserving anything.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
