The district is named after the temple Phra Samut Chedi, which was built 1827/28 by king Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (Rama II) on an island in the Chao Phraya river - hence its popular name Phra Chedi Klang Nam (Chedi in the middle of the water). The island is now connected with the left river banks.
At the mouth of the Chao Phraya is the Chulachomklao Fort, which was built in 1893 and came into use only once during the Paknam crisis in the same year. The fort is now accessible to visitors. The HTMS Maeklong, a former training ship of the Royal Thai Navy, is another attraction in the park.

Famous quotes containing the word sights:
“We cant always have the beautiful aspect of things. Let us make the most of our sights that are beautiful and let the others go”
—Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (18351910)
“We may have civilized bodies and yet barbarous souls. We are blind to the real sights of this world; deaf to its voice; and dead to its death. And not till we know, that one grief outweighs ten thousand joys will we become what Christianity is striving to make us.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“You shall see men you never heard of before, whose names you dont know,... and many other wild and noble sights before night, such as they who sit in parlors never dream of.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
