Phoenix Square

Phoenix Square is a cinema in the city centre of Leicester, England. The centre hosts digital exhibitions and films of the arthouse and world cinema genres. Before being named Phoenix Square, it was referred to as Leicester Digital Media Centre.

Work began on constructing the £21.5 million scheme in November 2007 and was completed in Autumn 2009: Phoenix Square officially opened on 19 November 2009. The cinema replaces the Phoenix Arts Centre, and maintains strong links with De Montfort University.

The building houses a digital exhibition space and digital production facilities, two cinema screens, a screen room and screen lounge. Space is provided for 37 new creative businesses, as well as a cafe/bar open to the public.

Famous quotes containing the words phoenix and/or square:

    Devouring Time, blunt thou the lion’s paws,
    And make the earth devour her own sweet brood;
    Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger’s jaws,
    And burn the long-liv’d phoenix in her blood;
    Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleet’st,
    And do what’er thou wilt, swift-footed Time,
    To the wide world and all her fading sweets;
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    If the physicians had not their cassocks and their mules, if the doctors had not their square caps and their robes four times too wide, they would never had duped the world, which cannot resist so original an appearance.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)
