Phoenix Club

Phoenix Club is a registered historic building in Cincinnati, Ohio, listed in the National Register on March 3, 1980.

The Phoenix Club was built in 1893 in order to accommodate Cincinnati's first professional Jewish men's club. It was established as a "German Organization of Jewish Men," and the by-laws provided that all proceedings, records and entertainments be in the German lanugage.

A 1909 report of The Cincinnati Industrial Magazine states "The Phoenix Club is the leading Jewish social organization of the city, but movement of wealthy families to the outlying districts made the maintenance of the clubhouse too great an expense. The property was sold for $185,000 and will be remodeled into a theater, with restaurant and roof garden."

Famous quotes containing the words phoenix and/or club:

    A phoenix it is
    This hearse that must bless
    With aromatic gums
    That cost great sums,
    The way of thurification
    To make a fumigation,
    Sweet of reflare,
    And redolent of air,
    John Skelton (1460?–1529)
