It may be:
- transudative (congestive heart failure, myxoedema, nephrotic syndrome),
- exudative (tuberculosis, spread from empyema)
- haemorrhagic (trauma, rupture of aneurysms, malignant effusion).
- malignant (due to fluid accumulation caused by metastasis)
