Paris Basis

The Paris Basis is a group of principles guiding the relationships between individual YMCAs.

Ninety-nine YMCA leaders of individual YMCAs from Europe and North America met for the first time prior to the 1855 Paris World Exposition to discuss the possibility of joining together in a federation enhance co-operation amongst individual YMCA societies. This meeting resulted in the Paris Basis which is still a guiding principle of the organization today.

Two themes resonated during the council:

  1. the need to respect the local autonomy of YMCA societies and
  2. the dogma that Christian churches are united and the YMCA is a way of manifesting that unity. (Muukkonen, 2002:85)

Famous quotes containing the words paris and/or basis:

If Paris lived now, and preferred beauty to power and riches, it would not be called his Judgment, but his Want of Judgment.
    Horace Walpole (1717–1797)

That food has always been, and will continue to be, the basis for one of our greater snobbisms does not explain the fact that the attitude toward the food choice of others is becoming more and more heatedly exclusive until it may well turn into one of those forms of bigotry against which gallant little committees are constantly planning campaigns in the cause of justice and decency.
    Cornelia Otis Skinner (1901–1979)
