Palestinian territories – West Bank and the Gaza Strip, politically under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian National Authority the Hamas Government in Gaza, and the Israeli Civil Administration. Since the Palestinian Declaration of Independence in 1988, the region is today recognized by three-quarters of the world's countries to be the State of Palestine. Although recently promoted to a non-member state status in the UN, the State of Palestine is not recognized by Israel and major Western nations, including the United States.
