Warfhuizen As A Marian Pilgrimage Site
See Our Lady of the Garden Enclosed (statue) for the main article about this topic.
Most visitors to the chapel specifically come to venerate Mary. This began after a lifesize processional statue, the 'Sorrowful mother of Warfhuizen', was placed in the chapel. The statue had such an appeal to faithful from the Netherlands and abroad, that the chapel became a pilgrimage site.

Famous quotes containing the words marian, pilgrimage and/or site:
“The master, the swabber, the boatswain and I,
The gunner and his mate,
Loved Mall, Meg, and Marian and Margery,
But none of us cared for Kate;
For she had a tongue with a tang,
Would cry to a sailor, Go hang!
She loved not the savour of tar nor of pitch,
Yet a tailor might scratch her whereer she did itch:
Then to sea, boys, and let her go hang.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“The ripest fruit first falls, and so doth he.
His time is spent; our pilgrimage must be.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“I am not aware that any man has ever built on the spot which I occupy. Deliver me from a city built on the site of a more ancient city, whose materials are ruins, whose gardens cemeteries. The soil is blanched and accursed there, and before that becomes necessary the earth itself will be destroyed.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
