Arrest For Corruption
On July 11, 2007, two days before his son's birthday, Kalu was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of corruption during his tenure as Governor of Abia State. He has been released on bail though his international passport was seized by the Nigerian government. He berated the Obasanjo government for witch-hunting and persecuting him during his time in office, an accusation based on the bold altercations he normally has with the former president. He also single-handedly lifted the state-owned football club, Enyimba football club to greater heights and international recognition when he invested heavily in the team, bringing in taleted players that will go ahead to win the Nigerian league and the elusive African champions league in December 2004, and still went ahead to retain the trophy the following year: the only Nigerian team to ever win the continental trophy till date. orji kalu has been known as a big football fan and visibly shows the love towards the sport. it was at that point in 2005 that he named the new "PILLAR OF SPORTS IN AFRICA"a position initially held by M.K.O Abiola due to his contribution to the game. His mother Mrs Eunice Uzor-kalu, who has been a big influence to his decision-making in office, has been criticised for monopolising government of Abia State together with the son, an accusation Orji refuted. Orji Uzor Kalu is married to Nkechi and they are blessed with 2 kids
