Expansion and Repudiation
Under Young, the practice of polygamy spread among Utah Mormons for 40 years. A maximum of 20–25% of LDS adults were members of polygamist households. One third of the women of marriageable age and nearly all of the church leadership were involved in the practice. The repeal was ostensibly directed by divine revelation to Wilford Woodruff and published as the 1890 Manifesto. Polygamy was finally effectively ended with the Second Manifesto.
