There are several ethnic groups in Orangi Town including Muhajirs, Punjabis, Sindhis, Kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, Balochis, Memons, Bohras, Ismailis, etc. A significant population of these Muhajirs are Biharis who migrated from Bihar in 1947 and East Pakistan in 1971.

Over 99% of the population is Muslim and 75% of the population is Muhajir, However local Muslims are slowly being forced into these townships and claims are made to save face by the Pakistani government. Orangi town has a population of approximately 2.5 million although government records report 700,000 inhabitants. In the last 15 years the Orangi Town's demography has substantially changed, as Pakhtun have occupied land and settled in this town in large numbers.. It is the largest town of Karachi.
