Famous quotes containing the words operation, phantom and/or thunder:
“It requires a surgical operation to get a joke well into a Scotch understanding. The only idea of wit, or rather that inferior variety of the electric talent which prevails occasionally in the North, and which, under the name of Wut, is so infinitely distressing to people of good taste, is laughing immoderately at stated intervals.”
—Sydney Smith (17711845)
“If only the phantom would stop reappearing!
Business, if you wanted to know, was punk at the opera.
The heroine no longer appeared in Faust.
The crowds strolled sadly away.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“It is the mind that is woven, the mind that was jerked
And tufted in straggling thunder and shattered sun.”
—Wallace Stevens (18791955)
