Prior to the turn of the 21st century, Oman's senior team have generally finished in last place in all competitions in which competed in. Oman nowadays exports players from England to Belgium, and Saudi Arabia, to Qatar. Former Omani captain, Hani Al-Dhabit was awarded the RSSSF 2001 World Top Scorer, with 22 goals; the most goals scored by a player who won the World Top Scorer award to date, and also being the third Arab to win the award, as well as being the first Omani.
The senior team has never qualified for the World Cup, but has qualified for the Asian Cup in the years 2004 and 2007, and reached the Gulf Cup of Nations final three times, and won it on its third attempt as hosts.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Look through the whole history of countries professing the Romish religion, and you will uniformly find the leaven of this besetting and accursed principle of actionthat the end will sanction any means.”
—Samuel Taylor Coleridge (17721834)
“The only history is a mere question of ones struggle inside oneself. But that is the joy of it. One need neither discover Americas nor conquer nations, and yet one has as great a work as Columbus or Alexander, to do.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“In history the great moment is, when the savage is just ceasing to be a savage, with all his hairy Pelasgic strength directed on his opening sense of beauty;and you have Pericles and Phidias, and not yet passed over into the Corinthian civility. Everything good in nature and in the world is in that moment of transition, when the swarthy juices still flow plentifully from nature, but their astrigency or acridity is got out by ethics and humanity.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
