Early History

The current building dates from 1656 with the left wing being slightly later but occupies the site of the ancient mansion of the former lords of the manor, whom were of the Radclyffe family from around 1480. A fire wiped out the original building and the current property was rebuilt by Sir John Radclyffe in 1656.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or history:

The Americans never use the word peasant, because they have no idea of the class which that term denotes; the ignorance of more remote ages, the simplicity of rural life, and the rusticity of the villager have not been preserved among them; and they are alike unacquainted with the virtues, the vices, the coarse habits, and the simple graces of an early stage of civilization.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)

I am not a literary man.... I am a man of science, and I am interested in that branch of Anthropology which deals with the history of human speech.
    —J.A.H. (James Augustus Henry)
