History
Service first started in 1957 with the SE trainset, which, on a trial run, attained the world speed record at the time (145 km/h) for a narrow gauge train. This record gave impetus for the design of the first Shinkansen, the 0 Series. The 50th anniversary of the Romancecar's narrow gauge world speed record was celebrated on 28 September 2007.
The trains were reformed from eight cars to five in 1968, becoming the 3000 series SSE (Short Super Express).
The SE trains were in service from 1957 to 1968, and the SSE from 1968 to 1991.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Let us not underrate the value of a fact; it will one day flower in a truth. It is astonishing how few facts of importance are added in a century to the natural history of any animal. The natural history of man himself is still being gradually written.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“It may be well to remember that the highest level of moral aspiration recorded in history was reached by a few ancient JewsMicah, Isaiah, and the restwho took no count whatever of what might not happen to them after death. It is not obvious to me why the same point should not by and by be reached by the Gentiles.”
—Thomas Henry Huxley (182595)
“Classes struggle, some classes triumph, others are eliminated. Such is history; such is the history of civilization for thousands of years.”
—Mao Zedong (18931976)
