Occidental College is a private, co-educational liberal arts college located in the historical Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1887 by clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church, Occidental College, or, "Oxy" as it is affectionately called by students and alumni, is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges on the West Coast. Although no longer formally affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, Occidental still retains the progressive and egalitarian values of its founders.
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected Occidental as a "community engagement institution".

Famous quotes containing the words occidental and/or college:
“There is a struggle between the Oriental and the Occidental in every nation; some who would be forever contemplating the sun, and some who are hastening toward the sunset. The former class says to the latter, When you have reached the sunset, you will be no nearer to the sun. To which the latter replies, But we so prolong the day.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“... when you make it a moral necessity for the young to dabble in all the subjects that the books on the top shelf are written about, you kill two very large birds with one stone: you satisfy precious curiosities, and you make them believe that they know as much about life as people who really know something. If college boys are solemnly advised to listen to lectures on prostitution, they will listen; and who is to blame if some time, in a less moral moment, they profit by their information?”
—Katharine Fullerton Gerould (18791944)
