North Hills School District
The North Hills School District, located in Northern Allegheny County, comprises Ross Township and West View Borough ~ a 14.6-square-mile (38 km2) area with a population of nearly 40,000.
Ross Township boasts strong retail corridors on McKnight Road and West View Plaza. Shopping malls, restaurants, specialty shops and other commercial establishments serve a large portion of Allegheny County. In addition, numerous recreational facilities and parks are located in and adjacent to the two communities.
The North Hills School District operates four elementary schools, which serve students from kindergarten through sixth grade. When the renovations of Ross Elementary were completed in August 2011, the district reached the conclusion of its long-term facilities plan that resulted in four 21st century elementary schools with enrollments of approximately 600-650 students. The average elementary class-size in the North Hills School District is 12 students.
The North Hills Junior High and North Hills High School share a hilltop campus. The district offers 219 Advanced Placement courses, college as well as postgraduate work in high school, a very highly rated honors program, as well as opportunities at the A.W. Beattie Career Center. Nearly 99 percent of North Hills graduates continue their formal education. In June 2010, North Hills High School was named the best high school in the United States, public or private, by Newsweek magazine. This was the school's twenty-second consecutive year making such a rank.
North Hills High School is unique in that all graduates with at least a 2.25 GPA are guaranteed admission to the Ivy League college of their choice with a minimum 75% tuition scholarship. Those with above a 2.5 GPA are eligible for additional college credits upon their high school graduation. Due to the rigorous curriculum at North Hills High School, many graduates have started college as second semester sophomores or juniors.
The 2010-11 student enrollment is 4,475. The district employs approximately 350 teachers and more than 700 total employees.
The millage rate for the 2010-11 fiscal year is 19.91 mills.
