Activities

The group holds meetings at the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle upon Tyne on the third Thursday of every month, featuring talks and discussions on ethical and social issues with visiting speakers. The group occasionally holds one-day regional conferences on Humanist subjects. Group members receive a quarterly newsletter which includes articles, a programme of events and matters of current interest. A wide range of social events are organised for members and non-members, including garden parties, quiz nights, country walks and museum visits.

Famous quotes containing the word activities:

The old, subjective, stagnant, indolent and wretched life for woman has gone. She has as many resources as men, as many activities beckon her on. As large possibilities swell and inspire her heart.
    Anna Julia Cooper (1859–1964)

Both at-home and working mothers can overmeet their mothering responsibilities. In order to justify their jobs, working mothers can overnurture, overconnect with, and overschedule their children into activities and classes. Similarly, some at-home mothers,... can make at- home mothering into a bigger deal than it is, over stimulating, overeducating, and overwhelming their children with purposeful attention.
    Jean Marzollo (20th century)

If it is to be done well, child-rearing requires, more than most activities of life, a good deal of decentering from one’s own needs and perspectives. Such decentering is relatively easy when a society is stable and when there is an extended, supportive structure that the parent can depend upon.
    David Elkind (20th century)
