The North American Datum is the official datum used for the primary geodetic network in North America. In the fields of cartography and land-use there are currently two North American Datums in use: the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27) and the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). Both are geodetic reference systems, but are based on different measurements.

Famous quotes containing the words north, american and/or datum:
“The pure products of America go crazymountain folk from Kentucky or the ribbed north end of Jersey with its isolate lakes and valleys, its deaf-mutes, thieves.”
—William Carlos Williams (18831963)
“Profound as race prejudice is against the Negro American, it is not practically as far- reaching as the prejudice against women. For stripping away the sentimentality which makes Mothers Day and Best American Mother Contests, the truth is that women suffer all the effects of a minority.”
—Pearl S. Buck (18921973)
“Language fails not because thought fails, but because no verbal symbols can do justice to the fullness and richness of thought. If we are to continue talking about data in any other sense than as reflective distinctions, the original datum is always such a qualitative whole.”
—John Dewey (18591952)
