Ninnescah River

The Ninnescah River is a 56.4-mile-long (90.8 km) river of southern Kansas.

It has two branches. The main stream flows southeast and empties its waters into the Arkansas River near the town of Oxford (Sumner County). In the southern part of Stafford County, this north fork flows northeastwardly to Plevna, (Reno County) where the course changes to southeast.

The south fork's source is in the western part of Pratt County. Its course is almost due east through Pratt County and Kingman County until it unites with the north fork in the southwest corner of Sedgwick County. The Ninnescah is then impounded by the Cheney Dam to create Cheney Reservoir, storing the municipal water supply of Wichita.

Famous quotes containing the word river:

Other roads do some violence to Nature, and bring the traveler to stare at her, but the river steals into the scenery it traverses without intrusion, silently creating and adorning it, and is as free to come and go as the zephyr.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
