Nez Perce National Forest - Wilderness Areas

Wilderness Areas

There are four officially designated wilderness areas within Nez Perce National Forest that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Three of these are partly or mostly in neighboring National Forests (as indicated).

  • Frank Church—River of No Return Wilderness (only 4.68% lies within Nez Perce NF; mostly in either Payette NF, Challis NF, Salmon NF, Boise NF, or Bitterroot NF)
  • Gospel Hump Wilderness
  • Hells Canyon Wilderness (mostly in Wallowa NF; partly in Payette NF, Whitman NF, or BLM land)
  • Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (partly in Bitterroot NF; Clearwater NF; Lolo NF)

Famous quotes containing the words wilderness and/or areas:

These were such houses as the lumberers of Maine spend the winter in, in the wilderness ... the camps and the hovels for the cattle, hardly distinguishable, except that the latter had no chimney.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

If a walker is indeed an individualist there is nowhere he can’t go at dawn and not many places he can’t go at noon. But just as it demeans life to live alongside a great river you can no longer swim in or drink from, to be crowded into safer areas and hours takes much of the gloss off walking—one sport you shouldn’t have to reserve a time and a court for.
    Edward Hoagland (b. 1932)
