Newlyn Art Gallery - The Exchange

The Exchange

In 2006, Newlyn Art Gallery announced a major programme of works including the extension of the current building and the creation of a new art gallery in Penzance, Cornwall known as The Exchange, located on the site of the former Penzance telephone exchange building. The two galleries were designed by MUMA (McInnes Usher McKnight Architects) following an architectural design competition managed by RIBA Competitions and they opened in July 2007. Used as a project space in which artists and curators test new ideas, from The Penzance Convention held in May 2012, to Shezad Dawood’s astounding exhibition running summer 2012. A major contemporary art space, The Exchange enables audiences to see work on a scale never before accessible in the region. It is also used as a venue for live performances, film screenings and community events.

Famous quotes containing the word exchange:

    But come what sorrow can,
It cannot countervail the exchange of joy
That one short minute gives me in her sight.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

The first place he went into was the Royal Exchange .... where men of all ages and all nations were assembled, with no other view than to barter for interest. The countenances of most of the people showed they were filled with anxiety; some indeed appeared pleased, but yet it was with a mixture of fear.... [David] resolved to stay no longer in a place where riches were esteemed goodness, and deceit, low cunning, and giving up all things to the love of gain were thought wisdom.
    Sarah Fielding (1710–1768)
