The Naval Academy Preparatory School or NAPS is the preparatory school for the United States Naval Academy. NAPS is located on a hill at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. The mission of the school is "To enhance Midshipman Candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for success at the United States Naval Academy". The student body, which is organized as a battalion is divided into three companies which are then divided into two platoons each. Each platoon from there is divided into four squads in order to carry out orders with effective results. While the students attend the NAPS they hold the rank of an E-1 which is the equivalent of a Seaman Recruit, but they claim the title of a Midshipman Candidate. A common nickname for the Midshipmen candidates is "NAPSter".

Famous quotes containing the words naval, academy and/or school:
“It is now time to stop and to ask ourselves the question which my last commanding officer, Admiral Hyman Rickover, asked me and every other young naval officer who serves or has served in an atomic submarine. For our Nation M for all of us M that question is, Why not the best?”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
“When the State wishes to endow an academy or university, it grants it a tract of forest land: one saw represents an academy, a gang, a university.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Im not making light of prayers here, but of so-called school prayer, which bears as much resemblance to real spiritual experience as that freeze-dried astronaut food bears to a nice standing rib roast. From what I remember of praying in school, it was almost an insult to God, a rote exercise in moving your mouth while daydreaming or checking out the cutest boy in the seventh grade that was a far, far cry from soul-searching.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
