The natural history group is often referred to as the third arm of a controlled drug trial, from the simple notion that a trial has three arms.
The observed outcomes within this group are then compared with the outcomes manifested by a group that has been given the active drug, and with that manifested by a second group who have been given a dummy, placebo drug (thus, the natural history group is the trial's "third arm").

Famous quotes containing the word arm:
“O God, thy arm was here,
And not to us, but to thy arm alone
Ascribe we all.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“Summoning a childs voice from a webfoot stone,
Never never oh never to regret the bugle I wore
On my cleaving arm as I blasted in a wave.
Now shown and mostly bare I would lie down,
Lie down, like down and live
As quiet as a bone.”
—Dylan Thomas (19141953)
