Providing capabilities beyond those of a "safety net" hospital, NCMC became Nassau's premier Level I Trauma Center and continues to add programs and services to meet the public's needs. NUMC’s designated Level I Trauma Center sees more than 75,000 patients each year. Operating as the tri-state area’s first Level I Trauma Center, the facility is distinguished by a multi-disciplinary wound care team and a multi-station hyperbaric oxygen chamber. NuHealth’s new, state of the art Emergency Department opened in 2011 with specialized and separate Emergency Departments for Pediatrics and Psychiatry. A $55 million-dollar facility, the Emergency Department features 32 patient rooms, 2 resuscitation rooms and a large 2-bay trauma room, equipped with the latest in advanced equipment. Programs offered through The Emergency Department include Pediatric and Family Support Services, The Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Rape Advocacy, Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner and (SAFE) Center of Excellence, and a Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Unit. Thanks in part to the generosity of the Nassau County Firefighter Burn Center Fund, NUMC is home to a $6.7 million, 12,000-square-foot Burn Center that is one of the best-staffed, most technologically sophisticated facilities in the United States. Equipped to treat as many as 10 patients at one time, NuHealth’s Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center includes a four-bed critical care unit and a six-bed unit for acute care. Nassau County’s only hyperbaric chamber, a facility that plays a critical role in the treatment of non-healing wounds. The Department of Surgery now provides 12 fully equipped operating suites. State-of-the-art anesthesiology and operating room management is provided by North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), a recognized leader found in top hospitals throughout the Northeast. Post-surgical care is managed by NuHealth’s hospitalists, a team of specialized physicians whose sole responsibility is ensuring care and safety during your stay at Nassau University Medical Center. NuHealth is now a Center of Excellence site for Bariatric Surgery.
