Mycobacterium Ulcerans - Treatment

Treatment

Preulcerative lesions are excised, and the skin is closed primarily. Ulcers are widely excised, and skin grafts applied. Continuous local heating to 40°C (e.g. by circulating water jackets) promotes healing, even without excision. Amputation of limbs is sometimes necessary. Appropriate physiotherapy is important when contracture deformities are likely to develop.

Small lesions can be treated with antibiotics alone. The current recommended regimen is rifampicin for eight weeks, with streptomycin injections given for the first four weeks, and then clarithromycin orally for the second four weeks. Antibiotics are ineffective in more extensive disease and surgery is always required.

Famous quotes containing the word treatment:

The treatment of African and African American culture in our education was no different from their treatment in Tarzan movies.
    Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)

Any important disease whose causality is murky, and for which treatment is ineffectual, tends to be awash in significance.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

I feel that any form of so called psychotherapy is strongly contraindicated for addicts.... The question “Why did you start using narcotics in the first place?” should never be asked. It is quite as irrelevant to treatment as it would be to ask a malarial patient why he went to a malarial area.
    William Burroughs (b. 1914)
