Music Institutions and Industry

Hawaii is home to a number of renowned music institutions in several fields. The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra is an important part of the state's musical history, and is the oldest orchestra in the United States west of the Rocky Mountains, founded in 1900. The Orchestra has collaborated with other local institutions, like the Hawaii Opera Theatre and the Oʻahu Choral Society, which sponsors the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and the Honolulu Chamber Choir.

Famous quotes containing the words music, institutions and/or industry:

In benevolent natures the impulse to pity is so sudden, that like instruments of music which obey the touch ... you would think the will was scarce concerned, and that the mind was altogether passive in the sympathy which her own goodness has excited. The truth is,—the soul is [so] ... wholly engrossed by the object of pity, that she does not ... take leisure to examine the principles upon which she acts.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

Schools are generally feminine places, institutions where conformity is valued, taught largely by conformist women.
    Judith M. Bardwick (b. 1933)

No delusion is greater than the notion that method and industry can make up for lack of mother-wit, either in science or in practical life.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895)
