“You cannot have one well-bred man without a whole society of such. They keep each other up to any high point. Especially women;Mit requires a great many cultivated women,—saloons of bright, elegant, reading women, accustomed to ease and refinement, to spectacles, pictures, sculpture, poetry, and to elegant society, in order that you have one Madame de Staël.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
“A society made up of individuals who were all capable of original thought would probably be unendurable.”

“O sinewy silver biplane, nudging the wind’s withers!
There, from Kill Devils Hill at Kitty Hawk
Two brothers in their twinship left the dune;
Warping the gale, the Wright wind wrestlers veered
Capeward, then blading the wind’s flank, banked and spun.”
—Hart Crane (1899–1932)
“To administer is to govern: to govern is to reign. That is the essence of the problem.”
—Honoré Gabriel Riquet, Comte De Mirabeau (1749–1791)
