Present Day
The M&KR network, relying as it did on coal and ironstone pits, and ironworks, declined as those minerals and industries were worked out, and most of the network has closed. Two very short sections remain, however: the north-south line from Sunnyside Junction towards Main Street, Coatbridge (although the bridge over Bank Street carries a diverted route built after the M&KR ceased to exist) and the eastward section from Sunnyside Junction to Greenside Junction, now part of the Glasgow - Airdrie line.

Famous quotes containing the words present and/or day:
“For present joys are more to flesh and blood
Than a dull prospect of a distant good.”
—John Dryden (16311700)
“Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation.... Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation.”
—Jean Arp (18871948)
