Missouri Route 96

Missouri Route 96

Route 96 is a state highway running between Interstate 44 at Halltown and Route 171 near Carl Junction. A large section of the highway between Halltown and Carthage served as U.S. Route 66 and is currently marked as Historic Route 66.

The road was numbered due to its being an extension of K-96 and its eastern terminus was in Carthage. When US 66 was deleted east of Joplin, Route 96 was extended to cover US 66. Route 96 was turned into Route YY west of Route 171 when Kansas deleted the eastern part of K-96.

Famous quotes containing the words missouri and/or route:

Slavery is founded in the selfishness of man’s nature—opposition to it, is [in?] his love of justice.... Repeal the Missouri compromise—repeal all compromises—repeal the declaration of independence—repeal all past history, you still can not repeal human nature. It still will be the abundance of man’s heart, that slavery extension is wrong; and out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

By a route obscure and lonely,
    Haunted by ill angels only,
    Where an eidolon, named Night,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
    From an ultimate dim Thule—
From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime,
    Out of space—out of time.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
