Famous quotes containing the words cast, island and/or girls:

It was always the work that was the gyroscope in my life. I don’t know who could have lived with me. As an architect you’re absolutely devoured. A woman’s cast in a lot of roles and a man isn’t. I couldn’t be an architect and be a wife and mother.
    Eleanore Kendall Pettersen (b. 1916)

When the inhabitants of some sequestered island first descry the “big canoe” of the European rolling through the blue waters towards their shores, they rush down to the beach in crowds, and with open arms stand ready to embrace the strangers. Fatal embrace! They fold to their bosoms the vipers whose sting is destined to poison all their joys; and the instinctive feeling of love within their breasts is soon converted into the bitterest hate.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

I lie and wait for morning, and the birds,
The first steps going down the unswept street,
Voices of girls with scarves around their heads.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
