Metro Centre Mall - History

History

Metrocentre Mall now known as Metro Centre Place was a joint venture of Cadillac Fairview of Canada, a regional shopping center development firm headed by a group of real estate investors and developers. The project was announced in November 1967, the first site plans and artist renderings announced in the spring of 1968, and construction beginning in June 1968. The mall was opened for business in October 1969, as a two level, five anchor mall. Metrocenter was the largest shopping center in California to date (housing more shopping space than the entire San Bernardino metropolitan area had in 1957) and was considered one of the largest shopping centers in the United States. The mall opened with 6 anchors and over 150 specialty retailers and shops on 2 levels. The original anchor tenants were:

  • Sears - (241,249 sq ft.) still in operation.
  • The Broadway - (180,000 sq ft.) became Macy's, location closed in the spring of 2005.
  • May Company - (156,000 sq ft.) became Robinsons-May, later Macy's in summer of 2006.
  • Harris Department Store - (149,000 sq ft.) is now Metrocenter Cinema.
  • JC Penney - closed in 2006.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of a soldier’s wound beguiles the pain of it.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

I believe that in the history of art and of thought there has always been at every living moment of culture a “will to renewal.” This is not the prerogative of the last decade only. All history is nothing but a succession of “crises”Mof rupture, repudiation and resistance.... When there is no “crisis,” there is stagnation, petrification and death. All thought, all art is aggressive.
    Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)

No matter how vital experience might be while you lived it, no sooner was it ended and dead than it became as lifeless as the piles of dry dust in a school history book.
    Ellen Glasgow (1874–1945)
